Elevated nucleated rbc in adults
Platelets are cell fragments that function in the clotting system. Thrombopoietin helps control the number of circulating platelets by stimulating the bone marrow to produce megakaryocytes, which in turn shed platelets from their cytoplasm. Thrombopoietin is produced in the liver at a constant rate and its circulating level is determined by the extent to which circulating platelets are cleared, and possibly by bone marrow megakaryocytes. Platelets circulate for 7 to 10 days. About one third are always transiently sequestered in the spleen.

These large phagocytes are found in essentially all tissues, where they patrol for potential pathogens by amoeboid movement. They take various forms with various names throughout the body e. Besides phagocytosis, they play a critical role in nonspecific defense innate immunity and also help initiate specific defense mechanisms adaptive immunity by recruiting other immune cells such as lymphocytes. For example, they are important as antigen presenters to T cells. In humans, dysfunctional macrophages cause severe diseases such as chronic granulomatous disease that result in frequent infections.

Red cell distribution width RDW is one of the numbers or blood cell indices that is included as part of a complete blood count CBC , and describes the variation in the size of red blood cells in a sample of blood. A higher RDW means that there is a greater variation in the size of red blood cells than expected. The RDW can be very helpful in distinguishing between the different types of anemia , especially if there is more than one type of anemia present. Even when blood counts such as the red blood cell count are normal, however, the RDW can be a valuable test.
